Browser-Based Accessibility: Turning Any Phone or Tablet into a Backup AAC

For non-speaking individuals and their families, a primary Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device isn’t just a gadget—it is a voice. But what happens when that device breaks, goes in for repairs, or when a user spends months stuck on a waitlist waiting for insurance approval or a formal evaluation?

Communication shouldn’t come to a halt while waiting on hardware. We built a simple, browser-based backup AAC board to serve as a reliable stopgap. It costs nothing, runs on any smartphone, tablet, or laptop, and requires zero software downloads.

Why Simple Works Best

When someone is temporarily displaced from their primary communication system, complex new interfaces become a barrier rather than a help. We intentionally kept this backup board lightweight, practical, and intuitive:

  • Zero Learning Curve: A clean, high-contrast grid layout mirrors standard core-vocabulary layouts. Users familiar with AAC can quickly locate high-frequency words like Help, I want, or Potty.

  • Visual & Auditory Feedback: Tapping any tile instantly displays the word in large text at the top of the screen while activating speech synthesis. This double-reinforcement ensures the message is clearly seen and heard in noisy environments.

  • On-Demand Custom Keyboard: For thoughts not covered by the core grid, a single tap opens a custom input line. The native device keyboard automatically pops up so users can type and speak full sentences.

How the Tech Works Under the Hood

You don’t need heavy apps or monthly subscriptions to maintain basic accessibility. This tool runs entirely on native browser standards:

  • Web Speech API: It leverages SpeechSynthesisUtterance, a built-in browser engine that converts text into natural spoken voice without needing external audio files or server processing.

Will it work on your browser? Most likely, view compatibility here: https://caniuse.com/speech-synthesis

  • Vanilla HTML, CSS, & JavaScript: Free of heavy frameworks or external dependencies, the page is tiny. It loads instantly on old hardware, slow tablets, or weak cellular connections.

  • Offline-Ready: Once opened in a browser tab, it continues to function locally without active internet access.

Keeping Voices Active

No one should lose the ability to express basic needs simply because their dedicated hardware is in a repair shop or on a multiple month long wait list. By leveraging standard web tools, this lightweight backup ensures that communication remains continuous, accessible, and ready whenever it’s needed most.
